Biography

"Norm Sculpting"Norm Greengard is a native Californian. Growing up in the historic Santa Clarita Valley, which served as a backdrop for film heroes like William S. Hart and Gene Autry, he developed a love for the Old West.  Today, he remains a resident of the Southern California.  As a young boy, Norm displayed a fascination with how things are built.  One of his first jobs was carpentry work.  Norm was inspired by a neighbor, a firefighter, and at 16 years old decided to pursue a career in firefighting. Three years later, Norm joined the Los Angeles Fire Department, where he has continued to serve for almost 30 years--currently holding the rank of captain.  Norm’s boyhood fascination for building and creating remains.  A number of years ago, Norm utilized his construction skills and built the home where he currently resides.  For many years he was a cabinetmaker, creating beautiful entertainment centers.  His other hobbies include restoring antiques and catch and release fly-fishing.  In 1998, at the age of 40, Norm began creating bronze sculptures.  He now concentrates his creative efforts on sculpting with his inspiration coming from nature, his life experiences, his love for the Old West and his family.  He begins each piece by building a wire armature to support the structure of the sculpture.  He then sculpts non-hardening clay into the final artwork.  The next step is to make a mold of the original clay image and have it professionally cast utilizing the “lost wax process.”  Finally, the patinas are applied to color the bronze and a walnut base with polished marble is added.  Each of Norm’s sculptures, from his romanticized visions of the Old West to his uplifting “Breeze Series,” captures a special feeling.  Each sculpture expresses a sense of motion or action while telling a unique story.

Artist Statement

Every so often, we discover an untapped, magical quality that resides deep within. For some, this leads to a new trail that provides many wonderful sights.  When I turned 40 years old, I discovered that that I had the ability to create sculptures, most often reflecting my love for the Old West. When I create a limited edition bronze sculpture, I strive to tell a story. I believe that an art lover should be inspired by the piece and feel the emotion of the sculpture.  As an artist, my desire is to capture your attention—much the same way a good writer or storyteller does.  My goal is to have the bronze catch your eye, and the emotion and feeling of the piece capture your imagination.
